Did you know there is such a thing called "summer reading loss?" It's a deficiency that causes children to fall behind their classmates due to lack of reading during summer vacation.
Even worse, summer reading loss is cumulative. Children don't "catch up" in the fall because the other children are moving ahead with their skills. By the end of 6th grade children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates.
To help ensure your children don't suffer from summer reading loss, sign them up for the Summer Reading Program at the West Pittston Library! The SRP is designed to foster literacy and develop a relationship between children and their local library.
During the 8 week program, your child will receive a prize each week just for reading! And since they're visiting the library once a week to get a prize, why not have them participate in the Summer Enrichment Series?!
The Enrichment Series is an optional program made available to those who joined the Reading Program. It's jam-packed with weekly games, songs, activities, and crafts. All ages are welcome!
This year, you'll travel the globe without ever leaving your library! These two 8-week programs run from June 27th- Aug 20th and are full of reading, prizes, games, crafts and songs from around the world.
Sign ups kick off Friday, June 24th from 9am-3pm with a Ronald McDonald Magic Show at 11am and a coloring table all day.
You must already be registered for the Summer Reading Program and sign up each week because space is limited.
Children (ages 2-6) - Fridays @ 1:00pm (& 3:00pm for the first 4 wks)
Youth (ages 7-11) - Mondays @ 1:00pm (& 3:00pm for the first 4 wks)
Teens (ages 12 & up) - Wednesdays @ 1:00pm
Family Progams (all ages) 7/27 & 8/17 @ 6:30pm
Every year the theme for the Summer Reading Program and Summer Enrichment Series is different so there's always something new. The 2010 theme made a splash with all things water. We had fun with beach balls and bubbles during Splish Splash Summer week, became pirates during High Seas Adventures week and learned about the water cycle during Wonders of Water week. All age groups participated. Even families got together for the very popular Water Fair.
To wrap it up, we threw a Splish Splash Reading Bash to celebrate the children's reading commitment and award them with a certificate of completion. Many other giveaways and fun things took place, including a Ronald McDonald Magic Show.
