Summer Reading Program

DID YOU KNOW?

Numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer prevents "summer reading loss".

Summer reading loss is cumulative. Children don't "catch up" in fall because the other children are moving ahead with their skills. By the end of 6th grade children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates.

To help ensure your children don't suffer from "summer reading loss", sign them up for the Summer Reading Program at the West Pittston Library! The SRP is designed to foster literacy and develop a relationship between children and their local library.

During the 8 week program your child will receive a prize each week just for reading! And since they're visiting the library once a week to get a prize, we also plan a variety of activities, crafts, songs and games to participate in.

LIFE'S A BEACH @ THE WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY THIS SUMMER!

Every year the theme for the Summer Reading program is different so there's always something new. The 2010 Summer Reading Program is makin' a splash with all things water. We'll be having fun with beach balls and bubbles during Splish Splash Summer week, become pirates during High Seas Adventures week and learn about the water cycle during Wonders of Water week.  Activities are available for all age groups, even families, like Wet and Wild Wednesday and the Water Fair that's scheduled.

To wrap it up, this year we're throwing a Splish Splash Reading Bash to celebrate the children's reading commitment and award them with a certificate of completion. Many other fun things and giveaways are planned as well, including a Ronald McDonald Magic Show.

2010 KICK-OFF EVENT DATE ANNOUNCED

We'll be slip sliding through Summer Reading Program Sign-Ups on Friday, June 25th from 9am-3pm! During that time a scavenger hunt, magic show, face painting, balloon animals, bean bag toss, and limbo are also scheduled.
