Summer Reading Program and

Arts and Crafts Series 2017

HEY PARENTS...DID YOU KNOW?!

Did you know there is such a thing called "summer reading loss?" It's a deficiency that causes children to fall behind their classmates due to lack of reading during summer vacation.

Even worse, summer reading loss is cumulative. Children don't "catch up" in the fall because the other children are moving ahead with their skills. By the end of 6th grade children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates.

Don't let your children fall behind this summer. To help ensure your children don't suffer from summer reading loss, keep them reading with the redesigned Summer Reading Program at the West Pittston Library! We've made the goals more attainable, prizes more achievable and finishing the program even easier!

The SRP is designed to foster literacy and develop a relationship between children and their local library. During the 7 week program, your child will receive a prize each week just for reading! And since they're visiting the library once a week to get a prize, why not have them participate in the Arts & Crafts Series?!

The Arts & Crafts Series is an optional program made available to those who joined the Reading Program. It's jam-packed with weekly games, songs, activities, and crafts. All ages are welcome!

ON YOUR MARK, GET SET, READ!

For 2016, you'll want to hop, skip and jump on over to join us for 7 weeks of hands-on FUN AND GAMES! Register your kids this year and their excitement will break records! Kids will love the out of the ordinary, crazy relay races in week one. Week two will cause a Motion Commotion with more body movers. Then we’re jumping back in time and all over the world to discover throwback activities and global games! We’ll bet they’ll be racing to our Sportstacular Science Fair and tackle our Grub Club food games with ease. And we can’t end the summer of games without trying some Olympic challenges!

On your mark, get set, go! Pre-game registration begins Fri., June 24th from 11am-3pm.

Here's what you missed last year:

BAM, POW, READ @ THE WEST PITTSTON LIBRARY

Every year the theme for the Summer Reading Program and Arts & Crafts Series is different so there's always something new. The 2015 theme had kids soaring to new heights.

It was a sight over which to "Marvel;" superheroes were the talk of the town during our annual library-palooza Summer Reading Program. This seven-week program introduced children to the world of heroes—both the super kind as well as the ones who live right in their own communities. Hundreds of books were read and children of all ages participated in thrilling activities. The super-kids designed their own capes and masks, tested their powers during Superhero Training Week, and even created their own superhero sidekicks. Teams competed to a fevered pitch to win the contest of most read books.

Our summer reading & crafts program keeps kids reading and actively engaged during the summer months to battle the greatest villain—"The Summer Slide." This learning loss occurs over the summer when children lack learning challenges during their break. This year 111 kids participated in the Summer Reading Program and read over 96,000 minutes!

Sure, super-speed and the power to leap tall buildings in a single bound are awesome, but the greatest super power of all? Totally reading.

The cherry atop the reading sundae? The biggest readers were granted special permission to throw pies in the face of library staff at the SRP Wrap-Up Party. We celebrated all the children's reading commitment and awarded them with a certificates of completion, free books and other prizes!

Keep your children reading this summer and let them have fun doing it! If you missed out on all the fun last year, we'll see YOU at the library this year!
