Numerous studies have shown that reading over the summer prevents "summer reading loss".
Summer reading loss is cumulative. Children don't "catch up" in fall because the other children are moving ahead with their skills. By the end of 6th grade children who lose reading skills over the summer are two years behind their classmates.
To help ensure your children don't suffer from "summer reading loss", sign them up for the Summer Reading Program at the West Pittston Library! The SRP is designed to foster literacy and develop a relationship between children and their local library.
Every year the theme is different so there's always something new. We plan a variety of activities, crafts and PRIZES that touch on a range of topics related to the theme.
Keep checking back for updates regarding sign-ups and kick-off events!!
