Now, more than ever, the support of the community is needed for libraries around the country to succeed. The state cut library funding by 20% in 2009 and an additional 9% in 2010. In these difficult economic times families in our community rely on the essential services we provide. They come to use free Internet access to keep in touch with their families and apply for jobs. They are checking out more books, DVDs and audio books than ever because their family budgets have shrunk. Cash-strapped families are forgoing expensive trips to the movie theaters, amusement parks and sporting events and are taking advantage of the free family programs at the West Pittston Library like Story Time, nature walks and the Summer Reading Program.
The success of our library is dependent on the support of our individual community members and businesses. This support can come in many ways. Some people donate their time and skills as volunteers. Others support enrichment programs by donating food and materials from their business. Importantly, many community members make donations to show the library, the local government, the county and state that they understand what an essential service the library provides. These community members and library users understand the value a strong public library has on their community. They understand that a library adds to the quality of life of community members and draws in businesses and new residents.
Take a few minutes to check out the Save our Libraries Action Tool Kit for ideas on how to help support your local library.
